Review: Top 12 Finalists Announced!
Last night, the Top 12 finalists for Season 9 were revealed, and America got it shockingly, mind-numbingly wrong in at least one case. Never in the 9-year history of this show do I remember a contestant as talented as Lilly Scott being sent home at this early stage. I mean, Katie Stevens over Lilly? Really?? What went wrong? I have a theory:
In these early weeks of the competition, the overwhelming majority of viewers are voting on the strength of that one week’s performance, and not the singer’s overall body of work. And being one of three blonde, guitar-strumming girls made it even more crucial for Lilly to stand out. Unfortunately, her “I Fall To Pieces” was a rare misstep that came on a night when both Crystal Bowersox and Didi Benami were the two best female showings of the week. Although Katie Stevens and Paige Miles are nowhere near as talented as Lilly, they do have their own unique identities all to themselves (Katie is the only teen girl and Paige is the only African-American girl left). If the show had asked that everyone vote for the contestant they’d most like to send home, we’d have seen very different results last night.
Katelyn Epperly is another singer that I wasn’t quite ready to let go of just yet, but again, since every single performance counts at this point, her borderline schlocky version of “I Feel the Earth Move” probably sealed her fate. The less upsetting eliminations for me were Todrick Hall and Alex Lambert, although I would have preferred to see a declining Andrew Garcia exit instead. Todrick at least went out on a high note with his swan song, which is more than I can say for poor, emotional Alex, who almost had to be carried off the stage in tears.
Certainly there are more than a few very talented singers left, but I wish I could use a magic version of Febreze to instantly eliminate four or five contestants who are really stinking up the joint. See if you can spot which ones in Season 9′s Top 12 Finalists:
Who is your favorite among the bunch? Which exclusion enraged you the most? Was the Scott McIntyre/Matt Giraud duet better or worse than last night’s group number? And finally, are you looking forward to hearing The Songs of The Rolling Stones next week? Sound off below!
