The globe is abuzz with soccer (or football) fever as FIFA’s World Cup 2010 kicks off today in South Africa and it’s showing across the web. In what is known as the most widely viewed sporting event in the world, the World Cup includes 32 teams from all regions of the globe and Twitter is now giving fans a way to show their pride.

This week, Twitter introduced “hashflags,” which appear when you use the three letter hashtag Twitter has assigned to each of the 32 nations competing.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone wrote in a blog that fans now have a “unique opportunity to connect with players, teams, and brands using Twitter to join the matches in a new way.”
