Former “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell called into “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” Wednesday along with newly announced “The X-Factor” judge L.A. Reid to talk about the new FOX singing show and how it’s different from “Idol.”

“The X-Factor is supposed to mean that you have an indefinable talent,” said Simon. “So it’s not just about your voice, it’s about everything. Somebody you wouldn’t normally expect to be a superstar, can be a superstar because you’re different.”

Simon has always been a big advocate of a singer being the complete package who both sounds good and presents themselves in a unique fashion.

“Now more than ever, image actually is important. You’ve got to stand out, you’ve got to be different,” explained Simon of aspiring singers. “I think if Lady Gaga had walked in with that weird meat dress on ‘Idol’ three years ago, we would’ve kicked her out, but you’ve got to be more open minded now.”

After squashing Ryan’s rumors of Snooki and Michael Bolton being judges on the show, record executive L.A. Reid joined the interview to talk about how he was chosen to judge “The X-Factor.”

“Simon and I have been friends for many many years and we sort of worked together back when there was a BMG Music,” said L.A. “One day Simon reached out to me, and said, ‘Are your ears burning?’ And they were.”

Simon also explained the delay in making the highly anticipated announcement of who the other two judges will be.

“You’ve got contracts, you’ve got dates, you change your mind, you meet new people,” said Simon. “Maybe in the next week we can announce the final two.”
