Alex Meruelo is the definition of rags to riches! He went from owning pizza parlors to purchasing the Atlanta Hawks basketball team! He joined On-Air with Ryan Seacrest this morning to talk about his rise to success and the path to owning a basketball franchise.

Alex’s first taste of success came after creating a pizza chain that caters to the Hispanic community called ‘La Pizza Loca.’ The success of that was overwhelming: “I started it back in 1985 or 1986. I was in the restaurant biz. There’s many Hispianics that would like a pizza chain that focuses on the Hispanic market and I did so and it turned out to be really really successful, so I’m very fortunate.”

Fast forward 25 years and Alex would find himself making a business deal with the NBA to become the new owner of the Atlanta Hawks. On his newest purchase, Alex says it’s a “lifelong dream come true. I’ve always been on sports teams and now to be on the cusp of owning one is truly a dream come true.” Although his request is in, Alex is still waiting for the NBA Voters Board’s approval but “should know in the next thirty to sixty days.” If his request is approved, maybe he’ll bring some La Pizza Loca to Atlanta for Ryan and his family to have when they head to their hometown!

We’ll be eagerly waiting to see if Alex Meruelo’s ownership works out. In the meantime, listen to his interview with Ryan!
