Katharine plays Iowa native Karen Cartwright. A girl just trying to live her dream of becoming an actress in the Big Apple (New York City).

Karen is your typical ambitious dreamer trying to make it in the city of big dreams. She’s working as a waitress and going on countless auditions. The struggling talent lives with her boyfriend, who is one of her biggest supporters. Karen’s family, who are not as supportive, come for a visit thereby stirring up some drama.

Along Karen’s journey, we stumble upon her competition, Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty). Ivy is in the business, already working on a Broadway show, but she wants to be the lead actress for a change. She’s sick of standing in the back. She wants her shot at glory.

The two eventually cross paths at an audition that will change both of their lives forever. The girls are up for a chance to have a starring role as Marilyn Monroe on Broadway.

In a sneak peek, given at the end of the pilot, of the upcoming season, it looks as if casting can’t make up their minds as to who should play Marilyn. Clips are revealed of the girls dancing to elaborate dance numbers and delivering outstanding vocals for episodes to come.

Aside from the singing abilities and amazing choreography of the show, an A-list cast is always in the audience’s favor. The show stars not only Katharine McPhee but Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. Plus, with Speilberg on board, there’s no doubt that this show will only get better and better.
