Although news of Whitney Houstons death came in the middle of Grammy rehearsals on Saturday, Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich announced late that afternoon that past Grammy winner and “American Idol” contestant Jennifer Hudson would honor Houston at the 54th annual awards show. Jennifer sang an emotional rendition of what many consider Whitney’s most iconic song, “I Will Always Love You.”

“As you know she was very closely associated with the Grammys, both as a performer and as a Grammy winner,” said Ehrlich. “So it’s a very sad day for us, it’s going to be tough to recover from. But we go on with the show.”

Jennifer Hudson was the perfect choice to honor Whitney. Not only is she remarkably talented and respected in the music industry, but she actually sang for Whitney Houston’s tribute during the BET Honors of 2010, which honored Whitney’s 25 years in the music industry. Jennifer didn’t attempt to hit Whitney’s classic last high note during her cover, but she did give a heart-felt shout out saying “Whitney, we love you!”

On this Tuesday’s “Glee,” Amber Riley will also sing “I Will Always Love You,” which is a fitting tribute to the late superstar on Valentine’s Day.
