American Idol Honors Billy Joel: Recap [VIDEO]

March 22, 2012 6:55 am

The theme this week on American Idol was Billy Joel! Each contestant picked their favorite Joel classic, well most of the contestants did — Joshua Ledet didn’t know who Billy Joel was! Mentoring this week was music tycoon Diddy, and the top 10 contenders got image advice  from  their American fashion designer consultant, Tommy Hilfiger.

DeAndre Brackensick took to the stage first and proved that he continues to grow in stage presence. He sang Billy Joel’s “Only The Good Die Young.” Based on the crowds reaction, DeAndre’s fan base is certainly growing. The Judges liked his up beat performance and agreed it was a good way to start the show.

Erica Van Pelt found her inner New Yorker singing the big apple classic, “New York State Of Mind.” Erica surprised the audience when she walked out onto the stage with a whole new makeover: she ditched her blonde locks for a short black do! The Judges loved the makeover and loved her performance because of her “beautiful vocals.”

Joshua Ledet struggled with Billy Joel’s “She’s Got A Way” during rehearsals. Josh delivered well  on stage, but the judges had mixed feelings about his performance stating he picked the wrong song. Randy, Jennifer, and Tyler agree that Joshua should never feel defeated during a performance because he should find confidence in his natural talent.

During rehearsals Skylar Laine was completely star struck after meeting Diddy — she even asked for an autograph!  Skylar did what she does best during her performance and put a country twang on Joel’s “Shameless.” Besides some pitch problems, Skylar proved that she is not shameless with her presentation choices. Another good performance for Skylar.

The judges were ecstatic with Elise Testone song choice this week and agreed that America finally got to see her personality as she got soulful on stage singing “Vienna.”

Contrary to the song title, Phillip Phillips took on Joel’s “Movin’ Out.” Randy proclaimed that Phillip’s performance was “one of the best of the renditions I’ve ever heard!”

After continuously being accused of dressing “too old for her age,” Hollie Cavanagh also got a slight makeover, courtesy of Tommy Hilfiger. As for her performance of “Honesty,” Hollie bit off more than she could chew  and delivered a pitchy performance.

Heejun Han scared the audience during the beginning of his performance by faking that he forgot the lyrics! When the audience fell dead silent and thought all was lost, Heejun turned to his pianist and said, “That is much too slow for me. I wanna dance!” Heejun kicked his performance of “My Life” into full throttle and brought the excitement. Despite his energy, the judges came down hard on Heejun because they believe he does not take certain tasks seriously.

Jessica Sanchez is still proving herself to be a rising star by singing, “Everybody Has A Dream.” Her goal this week was to concentrate on not over performing, and she succeeded. Steven Tyler joked, “You were at the front of the line when God was handing out vocal cords.” Randy called it “perfection.”

Colton Dixon sang a fitting song last night, Billy Joel’s smash “Piano Man.” Colton expressed how he personally loved this track, and this certainly showed during his performance. Colton’s rendition was beautiful and gave Jennifer Lopez “goosies.”

Tune in tonight at 8/7c on Fox for the live result show.
