American Idol Contestants Pay Tribute To Their Idols [VIDEOS]
Last night the remaining “American Idol” contestants got to pick a song of their choice, sung by their own idols! The contestants were on fire and almost every performance raised the bar. A total of five performance received a standing ovation! Stevie Nicks joined Jimmy Iovine as the guest celebrity mentor.
Rocker Colton Dixon kicked off the performances of the evening singing Lifehouse’s “Everything.” Colton continued to show off his star quality. His pitch was perfect and he sang beautifully. All three judges loved Colton’s performance and agreed that he is emerging as a star.
Skylar Laine channeled her country idol Miranda Lambert, and sang her hit “Gun Powder & Led.” Skylar gave an enthusiastic performance and it was clear that she was in her comfort zone. The judges loved her performance, but Randy gave her advice to focus her energy into the “story” of her songs.
Heejun Han had a great comeback this week singing “A Song For You” by Donny Hathaway. He proved to the judges (and to America) that he can buckle down and give a stellar performance. Impressed by his vibrato, the judges were proud that Heejun took the performance seriously.
Hollie Cavanagh sang idol alumni Carrie Underwood’s hit, “Jesus Take The Wheel.” Hollie had some pitch problems with lower notes according to Randy. Jennifer loved the performance, while Steven thought it was just okay.
DeAndre Brackensick sang “Sometimes I Cry” by Eric Benet. DeAndre definitely has the most unique voice this season. Steven compared him to Prince and Jennifer begged America to vote for him because she loved his performance so much!
Jessica Sanchez brought out alter ego “BZ Chez” when she sang Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dreams.” Jessica’s rendition was slow and soulful. She did a beautiful job and we wouldn’t be surprised if she inspired Beyoncé herself to slow down “Sweet Dreams” the next time she sings it.
Stevie Knicks gave Phillip Phillips the ultimate compliment by saying that if it were back in the 1970’s she believes he would’ve been asked to join Fleetwood Mac! Stevie was right when she said that “Still Rainin’” by Jonny Lang was a great song choice for Phillip because he received a standing ovation from all three judges.
Joshua Ledet was next and sang Mariah Carey’s “Without You.” Steven Tyler was correct when he said “Why is everyone pushing themselves so hard tonight?” Jennifer told Josh that his voice is a “god sent.”
Elise Testone closed out the show singing Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” This is a song Elise had previously sung with her band before Idol and she gave an amazing rock star performance. If Steven Tyler, a king of rock himself, says you killed a classic rock song, who is going to argue?
Two medleys were also performed tonight paying tribute to the king and queen of pop. The first by DeAndre, Heejun, and Joshua who sang several Michael Jackson hits. The second was performed by Jessica, Hollie, and Skylar who sang several hits by the ultimate “Material Girl,” Madonna.
Tune into Fox tomorrow night for the live result show and a performance by Nicki Minaj! 8/7c.
