American Idol Top 9 Becomes Top 8 [VIDEO]
Excitement, tears, and goodbyes, American Idol was full of surprises last night as the final 9 became 8.
The show began with a clip of the top 9 moving from their quaint hotel home to a palatial mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Here is where the talented performers will live for the remainder of the competition, but unfortunetly one Idol-hopeful’s stay was short lived.
It was time to get down to business as the nation’s votes were slowly and painfully announced. For every contestant, Jimmy Iovine made predictions of their fate based on their previous performances.
Phillip Phillips, Hollie Cavanagh, and Elise Testone were brought to the stage first. Phillip and Elise’s performances last night were two of the best this season. Although Hollie had a good performance, the judges reviews were mixed and she ended up being the first contestant of the evening to wind up in the bottom three.
Grammy nominated Nicki Minaj eased everyone’s minds of the pending results by performing her hit “Starships“, off of her sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. In typical Minaj fashion her performance was high energy, bright and colorful. She sported a mermaid-esque outfit, while her hip backup dancers were all decked out in beach gear. At the end of the performance she asked Ryan if she could return to Idol as a guest judge! Ryan deferred the question to the judges and it was decided that there was just not enough space for both bootilicious Nicki and bodacious Jennifer at the Judging table.
It was back to results as Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet, and Heejun Han were called to the stage. Colton’s previous performance was one of his best. He sang a personal favorite song of his, Lifehouse’s “Everything.” Colton let his emotions get the best of him and struggled to hold poise on stage. Randy proclaimed that Colton is for sure a big contender for the title. Joshua also let his emotions get the best of him and this held him back from winning the night, according to Jimmy. Heejun buckled down and delivered a serious performance. Unfortunately, Heejun’s comeback was not enough to save him and he joined Hollie in the bottom three.
Scotty McCreary took the stage next to perform his newest single “Water Tower Town,” and he did a good job of raising spirits at “American Idol” once again.
The final group to be called to the stage for results consisted of DeAnrde Brackensick, Skylar Laine, and Jessica Sanchez. Jessica amazed America with her last performance of “Sweet Dreams,” while both DeAndre and Skylar had mediocre performances. As a result, Skylar rounded out the evening’s bottom three contenders.
Skylar was the first to be be announced safe, leaving Hollie and Heejun up for elimination. In the end, it was decided that the judges would not use their save, and funny guy Heejun Han was eliminated .
