American Idol’s Final Eight Contestants Celebrate The ’80s [VIDEO]
On last night’s episode of American Idol, the final 8 contestants brought the ’80s back with a bang, singing their favorite classics from that decade. No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal mentored the aspiring singers this week on their particular song choices.
DeAndre Brackensick had another solid performance singing “I Like It” by The Powers. He looked comfortable, he enjoyed the crowd and he looked natural. Steven Tyler called his performance “Exceptional.”
Elise Testone sang Foreigner’s “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” An ’80s song was a great match up for Elise’s voice, but her performance was not up to par. The judges were not impressed and Jennifer Lopez claimed: “It wasn’t all good in some places.”
Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine joined forces for the first duet of the evening singing “Islands In The Stream” by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. The two had great chemistry on stage, that makes us wonder if there could be a romance brewing behind the “Idol” cameras?
Phillip Phillips was rocky during rehearsals but Gwen Stefani claimed that he would come through on stage and that she expects to see him in the “top, top finals.” During the beginning of his performance of Genesis’ “That’s All,” it was clear that he was trying to find his comfort zone. Once Phillip did he ended with a strong finish leaving the judges gloating over his individuality.
Hollie Cavanagh and DeAndre performed The Pointer Sisters‘ “I’m So Excited.” The judges commended Hollie for having fun with the song and stepping outside of her comfort zone.
This week Joshua Ledet focused on keeping his emotions at bay after last weeks minor melt down. He sang “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Joshua Ledet. The song was a great choice for Josh to effectively show his vocal capabilities. “Spectacular” was the word used by Jennifer to describe Josh’s performance.
After the success of her performance last week, Jessica Sanchez was determined to let her alter ego “Beebe Chez” dominate the stage every time she sings. This week Jessica nailed Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” and as always she delivered a powerhouse performance. Randy, who originally helped create this track with Whitney, said Jessica matched Whitney’s effortless singing ability tonight.
The duets continued with Phillip and Elise singing the Tom Petty and Stevie Knicks’ classic “Stop Dragging My Heart Around.” The song style suited them both well, as the two proved that together they could make great music!
Hollie Cavanagh sang the infamous “What A Feeling” from the soundtrack of “Flashdance.“ Hollie needed to concentrate this week on being less technical and bringing more emotion into her performances, but she only made it halfway there. The judges claimed she had a rough start but a strong ending.
The last duet of the evening was performed by Jessica and Joshua. They sang Aretha Franklin and George Michael’s “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me.” The judges were ecstatic with what may have been the best duet performance of the evening. Jessica and Joshua proved with this performance that they are the top contenders this season.
Colton Dixon gave a pop/rock version of the classic “Time After Time,” by Cyndi Lauper and it sounded great. He stayed in sync with the band throughout the entire performance, and all three judges agree Colton is ready to start recording.
Skylar Laine closed the evening with a bang singing “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler. Skylar took a great risk of opting to perform a power ballad instead of choosing one of her usual upbeat character songs, and successfully wowed the audience. Her performance even brought Jennifer to tears! This was Skylar’s best performance to date.
Tune into Fox tomorrow at 8 p.m. for the live result show!
