NBC To Live-Stream Every Minute of All 32 Olympic Sports

April 18, 2012 4:30 am

In a drastic policy shift that has fans praising the NBC Sports Digital team, NBCOlympics.com will live stream all Olympic sports for the first time. In games as recent as Beijing in 2008, NBC didn’t allow many competitions to be broadcast online for fear of losing viewers to the primetime show later in the day.

“The way consumers consume video has changed over the years,” said Rick Cordella, vice president and general manager of NBC Sports Digital Media in an interview with the New York Times. “We can’t go back with hindsight and say we were wrong.”

All 32 sporting events will be streamed live, no matter what the schedule is that day. Cordella explains, “if cameras are on it, we’ll stream it.”

But what does this mean for video highlights on demand?

“The vast majority of events will be archived immediately,” said Cordella, suggesting that just a handful of major gold medal moments in swimming, gymnastics, track and field and others may be kept offline until they air in primetime.
