Will.i.Am Moonwalks Across England with the Olympic Torch [VIDEO]
Black Eyed Peas‘ very own Will.i.Am was a surprise addition to the line-up at the Olympic Torch Relay in Taunton, Southwest England on Monday. He was was one of many chosen to carry the Olympic Flame and says he has known about participating in the Torch Relay for almost a year, but was told not to speak of it!
The Voice UK judge was cheered on by thousands as held his mobile device in one hand, and raised the torch in the other. Will.i.Am is best known for his music production, but he is also a big technology fan and entrepreneur. Intel named Will their Director of Creative Innovation. It’s no wonder why he carries his phone everywhere, even on his torch run! He kept his Twitter (@iamwill) followers updated during the stint sharing, “I’m #109 to run the olympic torch in taunton” and “Its my turn for the #runningthetorch #willpowerUK.”
Will even treated the audience to a little surprise dance. “I moonwalked on the torch run,” he said. “I was thinking ‘me and Michael [Jackson].'” Will says he was very close to the late Michael Jackson: “He would have been proud that I ran the torch.”
The 37-year-old talked about being honored to carry the flame. “It feels like a dream, something that you always saw on TV growing up.”
According to Washington Post, some of the past participating torchbearers have sold their torches on eBay for up to $240,000 in value. Some sellers say they will donate the proceeds to charity, however, Will.i.Am says his torch is not up for sale.
The Olympic torch will travel an 8,000 mile trip around the United Kingdom for 70 days. The flame will make it to London for the opening ceremony July 27th.
