Watch All of Jessica’s & Phillip’s Finale Performances [VIDEOS]
It was a battle of the opposites Tuesday night on “American Idol” as Jessica Sanchez, the 16-year-old student with the powerful voice, competed against Phillip Phillips, the pawnshop worker known for his originality.
The night began with round one featuring songs hand-selected from show creator Simon Fuller. Jessica was first with Whitney Houston’s “I Had Nothing.” No stranger to singing the late pop diva’s tunes, Jessica impressed the judges with her urban, soulful voice.
Phillip was given Benny King’s “Stand By Me,” that left less of an impression on the judges. Randy Jackson proclaimed round one went to Jessica.
Round two began next featuring the contestant’s favorite songs from this past season. Jessica sang “The Prayer” which earned her a spot in the top 24.
Phillip performed his song choice from Billy Joel week titled, “Movin’ Out.” The judges had mixed conclusions after listening to both singers. Steven Tyler thought Jessica won again, Jennifer Lopez argued Phillip won “because it was real,” while Randy called it dead even.
Last but not least, round three featured the finalists singing their first single if they win the competition.
Jessica’s song titled “Change Nothing” was not music to the judges’ ears. “I didn’t think it was the proper song for you to sing,” Steven said. Randy agreed saying, “You brought the song to life but I thought the song was just OK.”
Phillip closed the night with his single titled, “Home.” It was the only performance to receive a standing ovation from all the judges. Jennifer said, “It was so different… It’s just Phillip. Nothing on the radio sounds like that.” Randy was even more enthusiastic as he proclaimed, “I love the song. I love you… Everything about that was perfect.”
