Set in the pre-Civil War South, Leonardo’s character named Calvin Candie is a plantation owner who uses his slaves for prize fights to the death. It’s a role we aren’t used to seeing from the Hollywood heartthrob.

The Quentin Tarantino film, which could stir up some controversy, also stars Jamie Foxx as a freed slave on a mission to save his wife from servitude. The trailer makes it clear that the topic of slavery will not be swept under the rug, evident from the bruises and scars seen on Jamie’s body.
