Matt Lauer called in to “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” Monday morning to help Ryan prepare for his first Olympic Games with the “TODAY show” crew.

The gang recently filmed a promotional video for the NBC network. As it turns out, neither Matt nor Ryan knew what their role in the promo would be until after it was released.

“I didn’t know that I was fencing another person,” Ryan told Matt. “I didn’t know I was fencing Meredith. I thought I was just waving that thing at the camera. I would have been more careful.”

“She wailed on you,” Matt joked. “It’s weird because we shoot all these things in green screen and you have no idea what’s going on and then they have complete control.”

Surprisingly one of the sports that Matt ended up “competing in” during the promo was gymnastics—on the balance beam.

“Am I the only one who kept saying to these producers, ‘That’s not even a men’s event!’ I said to the guy, ‘No, you don’t understand, the men don’t do the balance beam.’ He said, ‘Don’t worry about it, just ham it up. We probably won’t use it anyway.’ And there it is.”

So what is Matt packing for the trip to London?
“You mean clothes? Most of us, from what I understand, you know the outfits the Greco-Roman wrestlers wear? That’s what you should bring. It’s the tank top with the tighty pants. You know what, it’s not suit and tie, it’s a little more causal, but I don’t think we go as casual as the track suits.”

When does he arrive?
“I’m going to fly on Saturday night the 21st to land there a day before we go on the air on the 23rd with the whole cast there. And then like you, I’m getting ready that week for opening ceremony, which is that Friday night so we’ve got rehearsals and things like that.”

Any clue to what the festivities will be like?
“I have to say, I’ve seen and read a lot about it, it’s gonna be great. I think the people are going to love the opening ceremony. And when you think about it, after Beijing four years ago with what that spectacle that was put on, London’s got a tough act to follow, but I think they’re gonna do it in a great way.”
