Mariah Carey Named ‘American Idol’ Judge

Mariah Carey has officially been named one of the first replacements for former “American Idol” judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

Steven Tyler Announces He is Leaving ‘American Idol’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly made the announcement Monday afternoon at the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour.

“We do in fact have one judge whose deal closed very, very recently,” Reilly said. “I think it’s the biggest recording artist that any of these shows have ever had.” He continued, “It’s an artist that many contestants have tried to emulate, have tried to sing [her] songs, have tried to hit the notes.”

When asked about her new gig Mariah seemed thrilled. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mariah spoke to the TCA crowd via telephone saying, “I am so excited to be joining ‘Idol.’ I wish I could be there today. I can’t wait too get started.” What are your thoughts on the new judge? Were you surprised?
