And the swimming gods have spoken.

In London’s first day of Olympic competition, America’s two favorite male swimmers went head to head in an event that everyone has been anticipating for quite some time.

However, the event was less of a battle than we expected, Ryan Lochte managed to capture the gold medal and beat Michael Phelps by over three whole seconds.

Phelps finished fourth, marking the first time since the 2000 Olympic games in Athens that he hasn’t won a medal.

So what happened? Phelps fans need not be discouraged, back in Beijing Phelps stated that he was done swimming the 400m IM because of its grueling nature, yet attempted the swim again for London. Lochte also beat him in the event at the Olympic trials, foreshadowing today’s results.

While this may not have been the start to the London Olympics that Phelps expected, you can bet that his fourth place finish will inspire him to swim that much harder in his remaining six events. The man needs three more medals (of any color) to become the most medaled Olympian in history, and we are confident that he will get there.
