Whispers, Roses, & A Budding Bromance — Lochte and Phelps Before They Were Rivals [PHOTOS]
Even before the 2012 London Olympics began, the hype surrounding Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte‘s rivalry was all that people could talk about. Yet you have to wonder as a spectator, whether that’s all this rivalry is—hype.
Because long before London there was Beijing, Athens and all the competitions in between, where Michael and Ryan showed one another some serious love as brothers, not rivals. Even recently as Ryan won gold in the men’s 400 IM, and Michael was knocked off the podium, the two friends exchanged thoughtful words on Twitter.

They have been teammates since 2004, when Ryan made his Olympic debut and they swam together in the 4×200 meter relay. They won gold that year. According to a profile on Lochte in the magazine Life in the Finger Lakes, it was the first loss for Team Australia in six years—and an incredible Phelps/Lochte bonding moment.
