One of the biggest rivalries at this summer’s Olympic Games came to a head Thursday as Michael Phelps raced against Ryan Lochte in the 200 IM race.

Michael, who became the most decorated Olympian ever after obtaining his nineteenth career medal earlier this week, competed against Ryan who was hoping to finally claim the top prize in this event. He won the bronze four years ago in Beijing and came behind Michael in 2004.

The race was tight but in the end, Michael took home his twentieth medal after finishing first. Ryan came in second by only 0.63 seconds. This win for Michael is the first time any Olympic Swimmer has won the same race three times in a row.

The race was Ryan’s second competition of the day after he won a bronze medal for 200M backstroke. After today, Ryan can relax as he no longer has any London events to prepare for. Michael, however, still has the chance to win two more medals as he competes in the 100M Butterfly Friday and a medley relay Saturday. Congratulations to Ryan and Michael, two of the best swimmers we’ve ever seen.
