Today Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant retelling of one of the 20th century’s most celebrated novels The Great Gatsby hit theaters and the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as its title character Jay Gatsby.

It’s quite possibly the most iconic character Leo has ever played, which is exactly why he almost turned down the role explaining:

“I was reluctant…because everybody has their interpretation of this character and their own intimate understanding of him.”
