Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Talks CelebrateLA! Block Party

June 5, 2013 8:30 am

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is stepping down from the position when his eight-year term comes to an end on June 30, phoned in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest to talk the upcoming ultimate Los Angeles block party, CelebrateLA!, as well as whether incoming Mayor Eric Garcetti will live in the Getty House.

Villaraigosa describes the June 7 event, which is open to the public, as: “Its a block party celebrating multi-cultural L.A. People forget over the last eight years, we’ve celebrated the various ethnic communities: African-American, Latino, Asian-American, Pacific Islander, Native American, the LGBT community … These are communities that often times aren’t celebrated but they’re a big part of L.A., so every year four or five times a year we celebrate these communities and it’s a way to celebrate multi-cultural, multi-lingual L.A.”

“We come from 140 countries,” Villaraigosa added. “We speak 220 languages. About 64% of L.A. comes from Latin America, Asia, and Africa … This is a town that doesn’t care who your daddy is, and in my case, they don’t care I didn’t have one and with Judge Walker’s decision on marriage equality, they don’t care if you have two of them.”

So will incoming mayor Garcetti live in the Getty House? “He actually came by the other day a couple days after the election, and he and I had breakfast at Getty House and talked a bit … and his wife has already had a little tour and they’re checking the curtains. They haven’t decided if they’ll live there or not, but I hope they do because I tell them it’s public housing at it’s finest.”

Join the Mayor at CelebrateLA! as well as former President Bill Clinton, musical guests Pepe Aguilar, and more surprise guests on Friday, June 7 from 5-10 p.m.

The event takes place just steps of City Hall and Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles, from Spring Street to Broadway, between First and Temple Streets. For more information, click here!
