Kay’s ‘Next to You’ Video, Acoustic Performance
We’d like to introduce you to a name you should definitely put on your radar: Kay!
The sassy, freckle-faced singer has worked with a slew of EDM heavyweights, like Diplo, Tiesto, and Steve Aoki, but now she’s making her own imprint.
And if her new single, “Next to You,” is any indication, we will be hearing a lot more from Kay (who previously went by the moniker My Name Is Kay). Not only is the song super catchy, but the video — which RyanSeacrest.com is premiering right here — really depicts her creative and colorful side.
It also stars some of her closest friends. “This is the thing about the music and the video I want everyone to know,” explains Kay. “I’m not signed. It seriously takes a village. And I had all my friends volunteer their time … The video is all my close friends, and we’re having a blast. And I want people to feel that when they watch it.
We were also lucky enough to have Kay perform an acoustic set recently at the Los Angeles showroom for Joyrich, one of her favorite clothing lines. In addition to her new single, she also killed it with a stripped-down version of the Red Hot Chili Pepper‘s “Under the Bridge.”
Although Kay admits she doesn’t see how she’s like the “Starships” rapper, she appreciates it … and explains why in true Kay fashion.
“Well, not in my eyes, but she’s amazing and she’s wonderful. What an amazing comparison. I’d rather be compared to her than [Limp Bizkit frontman] Fred Durst. I’ve also been compared to him. True story.” Really?! “No,” she admits without missing a beat.
As for when we can expect a full-length album, Kay says she has no immediate timetable. “You know what, I don’t even care about the album because I don’t have a huge fanbase yet,” she explains.
But Karli disagrees. “I think your fanbase is patiently waiting.” (We’re siding with Karli on this one!)
“When the time seems right, I want to put it out,” Kay clarifies. “I have enough music to put out a couple albums, but I’d hate to put it out and it’s like a ship passing in the night. We’re sleeping … the ship is passing. When was the last time you knew a ship passed at night? Never. That’s what I’m saying.”
Until Kay does release a full-length album, fans can hold themselves over with “Next to You” on iTunes here!
