10 Stars Who Are Independent
Happy Fourth of July!
In honor of America’s independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776, let’s honor some of Hollywood’s most independent, free thinkers who don’t conform to be like the majority of their peers.
Here are our top 10 choices in no particular order:
No Disney star has quite broken the mold of squeaky-clean teeny bopper quite like Miley. Over the years since Hannah Montana ended, her clothes have gotten skimpier and her hair shorter and shorter … but as she sings in “We Can’t Stop,” “forget the haters because somebody loves ya.” Words to live by, no?
Much like Miley, Demi has worked hard to shake her teen star image, but once things started to take a dark path, she took a stand and sought treatment before things spun out of control. Now, she’s a “Warrior” and we admire her strength and how she inspires her fans to live the same way.
In the true spirit of being independent, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have achieved uber-success with the help of no record label … they did all on their own! And after hits like “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us,” they’ve really proven how open-minded they are with their fourth single, “Same Love,” which calls out homophobia.
Anyone who has watched their E! reality show, The Wanted Life, know that the five lads who make up The Wanted — Tom Parker, Max George, Nathan Sykes, Jay McGuiness, and Siva Kaneswaran — love being rock stars … and they’re not afraid to show it with lots of partying. But despite their success, they’re also a bunch of sweethearts and are continually finding ways to give back to their loyal fans.
A former gospel-rock singer who grew up in a very religious household, Katy really took a leap of faith with her first single, “I Kissed a Girl.” Although her family didn’t always support her lyrics (or those eye-popping stage costumes), she took a chance and has gone on to be one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Baby, you’re a firework!
Although she hit the scene during the reign of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in the late ’90s, Pink (real name: Alecia Moore) never, ever tried to emulate her peers, and instead carved out her own niche … and all these years later, she’s still at the top of her game. And even though she’s married (in fact, she was the one who proposed to Carey Hart) and is a mother, she still likes to show her wild side!
Rihanna is the epitome of a good girl gone bad … and we like it! Over the years, the “Stay” singer has shocked whether it’s with her ever-changing hairstyles and colors, potty mouth, marijuana smoking, revealing outfits, and suggestive dance moves, but she’s never apologized for who she is. And why should she?
The rapper has been paving his own way ever since his 2004 debut album, The College Dropout, and is just as famous for what he says off his records than on … Taylor Swift-Gate anyone? Still, it’s Kanye speaking his own mind that has made us take notice and respect what he’s trying to do.
Much like Pink, the “Born This Way” singer has always thought outside the box when it comes to her music and her art, even if sometimes it was just a little too weird … like that meat dress. Still, Mother Monster has inspired her millions of fans to do the same and celebrate their individuality, and for that, we salute her.
Come on, his last name is Mars, after all! The “Treasure” singer’s music and style have always had a throw-back feel, but with just the right kind of modern twist. Bruno’s live performances are just as special and different, as he can often be seen grooving with his bandmates, while not missing a beat … or being out of breath.
