Reddit Users Cheer up 2-Year-Old Cancer Patient With Pizza Party
A slice of pizza can turn any bad day around, but for this child it meant whole lot more.
The family of 2-year-old daughter, Hazel Hammersley, who is battling high-risk stage 3 neuroblastoma (a form of cancer), wanted anything to get their minds off of the serious situation.
One day, while trying to pass time during Hazel’s 18-month-long stay at the Children’s Hosptial in Los Angeles, the little girl’s mom and grandmother decided to spell out the words ”Send Pizza Room 4112″ in tape on the windows of her hospital room for fun, expecting nothing to come of it.
Days passed without anyone taking notice of the window sign until someone posted a picture of Hazel’s window to the social media site, Reddit, creating instant buzz.
Reddit users saw the picture and immediately called into the hospital to send pizza over to the adorable girl and by the time Hazel could actually say the word “pizza” again, hundreds of boxes were being sent to her and her family. So much pizza in fact, that the hospital and family had to finally deny orders!
In an interview with Yahoo! Hazel’s mother, Lauren Hammersley, expressed how overjoyed she was to see so many strangers wanting to help Hazel, even if that meant enjoying a slice of pizza for a few minutes.
“Honestly it meant the world,” Lauren said. “We had a good time in the midst of a terribling and devastating illness. It was nice to be able to bring some joy.”
Hazel’s mom has been documenting her daughter’s journey in a blog that she hopes more people see to bring awareness to the serious issue of childhood cancer.
