‘The Hollywood Reporter’ Spotlights Ryan Seacrest Foundation
With the help of local journalism students and entertainment superstars, including Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, David Beckham, and Selena Gomez, who became an RSF ambassador in 2012, children with illnesses are able to experience the ins and outs of radio and television in their fully equipped mini-broadcast centers located directly inside the lobbies of participating children’s hospitals. These hospitals can be found in Orange County, California, Atlanta, Dallas, Philadelphia, and the newest center will be opening in Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 29.
Selena remembers how happy the kids were when she helped open the center in her hometown of Dallas last November. “To be able to escape their everyday struggles and have fun can make all the difference in the world,” the weeklong birthday girl told THR. “Ryan makes the experience so uplifting and encouraging, even though the kids are going through such a difficult time.”
Through Ryan’s vision and work with the foundation, and the support of his bosses at Clear Channel, these children are given hands-on opportunities in the world of broadcasting, from taping their own segments to watching them on a closed-circuit television network ― it’s an experience they’ll always remember.
“Parents would often say that their kids ran out of things to do,” Ryan told the magazine. “They would get bored essentially being in their beds, so I tried to think of what we could do to create more activities in the hospital that didn’t leave anyone out.”
