Lady Gaga Dishes on ‘ARTPOP,’ Hip Injury During Hour-Long Interview

Here you are, Little Monsters!

Lady Gaga stopped by On Air with Ryan Seacrest for an exclusive hour-long in-studio interview, and wearing her “Applause”  makeup, which she described as “a pissed-off teenager that made out with a clown.”

The songstress, who talked about everything from her new single to her weight loss, hip injury, and even Katy Perry, began by proclaiming: “There’s a pop emergency Ryan! My song leaked!”

After Gaga’s new single off her upcoming album ARTPOP leaked early on the Internet, the media immediately turned to pit Katy, who also released new music “Roar,” against Gaga, causing Mother Monster to tweet: “Let’s make 2013 a year where music/talent/artistry is more important than gossip/fanwars I respect all fanbases 4 their passion.”

Why did she speak up? “I was really bothered by the media pitting me and Katy Perry against each other because look, we both just happened to want to put our singles out wihtin a week of each other,” Gaga tells us. “And it’s not necessarily convenient for everyone and may be a little bit awkward … But we don’t need to force feed this negativity in to it until everyone explodes it just turns it in to a competition … and I really like Katy Perry and respect everyone in this industry because it was really hard for me to get here and I’m sure it wasn’t easy for her to get where she is, so I just wanted to put an end to it.”

And with any feud rumors aside, Gaga went on to explain her new single and her colorful look. “It’s the makeup from my cover for the single ‘Applause.’ We did this makeup on set for the video … and during the film basically we were shooting and I had this clown makeup on my face and as I was singing, I got very passionate and frustrated because I really missed my fans and my hip breaking and everything that happened on tour … [so] I took my hands and smeared the makeup down my face to look like tears and it became one of our favorite scenes in the video so we used it for our ‘Applause’ cover.”

As for what’s behind the new jam, Gaga admits, “it’s a little deeper” than just living for the applause of her fans and stems from having to end her Born This Way Ball tour 20 shows early (after having 99 done) because of her injury.

“When I was finishing the tour, I was physically breaking,” she remembers. “I was in a lot of pain, but didn’t know where really. Anyone that’s a performer and does these world tours, will tell you your body goes through a tremendous amount of stress, and I didn’t know what was wrong … I have a strong threshold for pain, so I kept slapping myself saying, ‘Get it together’… and I was going crazy cause my moves didn’t feel the same and … the only thing that kept me going was the applause … and I was able to drown out the pain and finish the show.”

However, deciding on a single off the album wasn’t an easy task. Gaga and her co-producer DJ White Shadow (photo below) reveal that the name for the album came about just “three days after Born This Way came out two years ago.”

“We wrote 70 to 100 songs over the course of two and a half years and … then we brought it to our friends and said, ‘What do you think?'” DJ White Shadow says. “You play the music and you just wait to see who gets drunk and takes their shirt off first,” Gaga adds, laughing.

Jimmy Iovine was there and we had played him 40 songs he wouldnt let me take my computer with me,” she adds. “And at the end, we had a couple glasses of wine, and … ‘Applause’ almost didn’t make the album. We played ‘Applause’ last and Jimmy looked at me and said, ‘Every record that you played me is better than the one that you played before it, so the last one should be your first single.'”

Aside from talking music, Gaga also discussed her recently slimmed-down frame and explained what was going on in that Abramovic Method video, better known to us as Gaga doing yoga naked in a forest.

“Well you know, I had to get back in shape, but to be fair I have never cared about my weight … it’s other people that care,” Gaga admits. “I do fear at times that if I’m not in shape, people will talk about that and not my music.”

As for the head-scratching video, Gaga explains: “This is called The Cleaning of the House Marina [Abramović, a performance artist,] has been a tremendous inspiration of mine since I was very young … and I wanted my fans to know her because I thought they’d understand me a bit better.”

“We did a series of different techniques and exercises that are her specific philosphy and you begin with sound and clean out the sound energy in our bodies and cleanse the palette of you as a life force and then she spent a lot of time putting me through other various exercises, like she left me in the woods for three hours blindfolded and I had to find my way home … And I kept walking towards a cliff, so she kept grabbing me.”
