Joel McHale Talks Dieting, Kanye West, and ‘The Soup Investigates’

Joel McHale phoned in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest to talk about his new show, a spin-off of The Soup, called The Soup Investigates.

But first, and naturally so, the E! host had to chat about diet secrets with Ryan. Joel shares he’s still following the Slow Carb Diet, which he explains as: “You basically eat really sensible for six days — you just eat carb free for six days — and then on the seventh day you eat like a 14-year-old boy … You go nuts. That way you trick your metabolism into continuing to move fast because when your metabolism slows down from dieting, then you stop losing weight. … I basically eat until I pass out. It’s great. You can have anything on the cheat day, [but] the next day I do feel like I might die, but then you go back to the diet and it works.”

And Joel’s hard work can be seen when he’s hosting E!’s new show, The Soup Investigates. So why’d he take on another show? “I wanted more money so I decided to do a spin-off show and I wanted to be able to sit down for the show because on The Soup I stand,” laughs the comedian.

All jokes aside, the funny man explains The Soup Investigates as: “There was always a talk of going more in-depth with pop culture stories, so like The Daily Show, where they send correspondents out, we go way further in and I host it and the correspondents [go out] and it’s that simple and hopefully funny.”

And considering a recent pop culture moment – when Kanye West lashed out at Jimmy Kimmel after he spoofed an interview the rapper did – we had to wonder, what does an investigative McHale think of the situation?

“With every time Kanye responds, it’s like a bug caught in a web and he  continues to struggle and just wraps himself up further,” the host says. “And Kimmel is so funny, it’s so great. He even said it, ‘I’m in a rap feud.’ … It was the funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile.”

The Soup Investigates premieres Wednesday, October 2 at 10:30 p.m.
