Jared Leto Talks ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ Covering Rihanna’s ‘Stay’
Jared Leto is a man of many talents.
The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman revealed his vocal chops when he recently hit the iHeartRadio Music Festival stage in Las Vegas and opened with a cover of Rihanna‘s “Stay,” and he has wowed us with his transformation in the upcoming drama, Dallas Buyers Club.
“I think it was the first time a lot of people had seen us in that world,” the singer talks of his Vegas performance. “We thought [performing "Stay"] would be fun to come out and do something really different and really simple. We were playing alongside Paul McCartney, Bruno Mars, and Justin Timberlake and you can’t really compete with them, so we thought, let’s go out and play something that’s really, really simple.”
The band will be gracing Los Angeles with a performance at the Hollywood Bowl this weekend and Jared reveals it’ll be their biggest performance yet in the city. “This is going to be one of the most special and unforgettable shows that we’ve ever played.”
And although he took a six-year break from acting, the musician is already generating Oscar buzz with his performance as Rayon, an HIV-positive transsexual in Dallas Buyers Club.
“I was really busy touring… and I hadn’t read a script in a couple years,” Jared explains. “But … I read it and I fell in love. It was a really challenging role and … I thought it would be a really interesting journey to go on.”
A journey which would lead him to lose over 40 pounds. “It’s never an easy thing to lose that much weight,” he admits. “I had done it before for Requiem for a Dream and I have gained a bunch of weight for another film as well, I gained 60 pounds once, so it’s an experience, but it never gets easier.”
Although no easy feat, the actor admits it’s necessary for the role.
“The weight [loss] is great because it helps change the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you think, the way people treat you and I was playing someone who was dying of AIDS and was also a drug addict, so it was kind of a necessity.”
So just how did the actor drop all that weight? “I stopped eating, literally. I had a very short period of time of which to do it and at the end of the day, it’s just math. You have to burn more calories than you take in.”
