‘Captain Phillips’ Actor Barkhad Abdi on Meeting Tom Hanks the First Time
There’s a name you’re likely not too familiar with on the Golden Globes nominations list this year and it’s actor Barkhad Abdi, who starred alongside Tom Hanks in this year’s Captain Phillips.
The Somalian-born actor made his acting debut alongside the Oscar winner with Captain Phillips, in which he plays the leader of the Somali pirates who overtake the Maersk Alabama and take the captain (played by Hanks) hostage.
The role has now caused his name to surface and even garnered him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
So what was the experience like for Barkhad himself? And how was meeting Tom Hanks, whose character he kidnaps?
“That was a little scary,” Barkhad tells On Air with Ryan Seacrest. “That was the first time I had met Tom and it was nerve-racking because the scene had to come out correctly. I had to nail it.”
If you missed Captain Phillips, have no fear. Catch it on DVD this January or in theaters when it’s re-released January 15.
