Ed Sheeran Talks New Album, Covers Beyoncé’s ‘Drunk In Love’
Ed Sheeran stopped by On Air with Ryan Seacrest just days after his incredible performance with Elton John at his Oscars after-party to talk about his upcoming new music … and he even graced us with a cover of Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love.”
The “A Team” singer admits that when it came to performing with Sir Elton John on Sunday, he didn’t have any forewarning.
“I wasn’t actually told I was doing that and none of my team knew about it as well. Like, I went to rehearse that day and Elton turned up and was like, ‘Oh, I’m going to get on the piano and jam a song, what would you want to play?’ And I was like, ‘Candle In the Wind‘? And he was like, ‘Yeah, of course.’ And we played it and he was like, ‘Right, cool. So that’ll be the second to last song on the set list,'” Ed jokes.
Despite it being last-minute, the two performed the song perfectly, the same way Ed has done it for the majority of 2013 while he was on the road.
“I was in America for 11-and-a-half months, which as an Englishman is quite a tough thing to do,” explains Ed. “I lived in Nashville for six months, I lived in L.A. for three months and New York for two.”
But the British singer admits being in America actually helped influence his upcoming record.
“I wrote a lot of stuff. I wrote the whole of this next record … over the course of the year, I wrote 120 songs … America is one of those countries where you have a lot of experiences and meet a lot of new people … it’s not like rapping about road changes, but there are songs inspired by Nashville and things like that … and I took more influence from music here, I got to work with a lot of very cool people over here producer-wise.”
“Lego House” singer is also wearing his upcoming album on his arm … literally! Ed admits a lot of his music influences his tattoos. “I just got a teddy bear actually … [on my bicep which] makes it a bit more manly … a lot of it is actually [influenced by my music] like this ‘Blood Stream.’ That’s a song.”
When asked by a fan who called in about how he makes his music so relatable, the 23-year-old admits he’s always surprised people are able to relate to it.
“I just don’t really know because the lyrics I write are so personal to me, I’m a selfish song writer … so when people say they relate to it, it’s always a bit of a shock because you’re so introverted when writing.”
