Katy Perry went from having a cupcake bra in her 2010 music video “California Gurls” to becoming “Cupcake Queen” for a portrait at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

In the sweet oil-on-linen painting done by Will Cotton – who is also responsible for her iconic video — the pop star is wearing a crinkly white dress resembling a cupcake wrapper, with a candy necklace, headpiece, and scepter.

“Katy Perry comes from an American Tradition of strong women entertainers who have ‘turned the tables’ on their audiences by challenging the supposedly superficial representation of their pop personas,” said Kim Sajet, director of the Portrait Gallery. Sajet describes the “Dark Horse” singer in the portrait as “accessorized but not labeled: she’s the one in control.”

“Cupcake Queen” — which will make its debut on June 18 — is expected to “enrich the National Portrait Gallery’s collection of influential women in the music industry,” the museum adds.
