Selena Gomez Shares Photos From Charity Expedition in Nepal

Selena Gomez went off the grid and used her star power to pay it forward — but now she’s back and ready to share her story. On behalf of UNICEF, the 21-year-old traveled to Nepal to raise awareness for the children’s needs.

During her trip, the “Come & Get It” singer interacted with the children attending the Satbariya Rapti Secondary School and documented her journey — which she describes as an “eye-opener” — in a series of Instagram photos and videos (below).

“This visit to Nepal was extraordinarily powerful—at times, devastating and heartbreaking, but also incredibly inspiring,” the starlet said in a statement. “At first when you witness children living in extreme poverty you wonder how it is possible that they can be deprived of their basic human needs and rights. Then you talk to these children and you see hope, promise and a bright future.

“This generation of children believes they can make a difference, and they take action,” she continued. “It starts with quality education and leadership opportunities, like those UNICEF is providing. I’m so proud to serve as a UNICEF Ambassador and be part of a greater movement to help the world’s children.”

On May 23, the “Slow Down” singer hinted at her spiritual growth by uploading a photo of herself in a yellow bikini with the caption, “Taking my power back.. can’t wait to show you where I’ve been.”

Selena is known as one of Hollywood’s biggest philanthropists. The Stars Dance artist became the youngest UNICEF ambassador when she was appointed in 2009, and she was named an ambassador for the Ryan Seacrest Foundation in 2012.
