Colbie Caillat Puts Spotlight on Natural Beauty in ‘Try’ Lyric Video

“Stay true to yourself. You don’t have to try,” Colbie Caillat remembers co-writer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds telling her in the studio.

Colbie kept repeating that line over, and thus, a song was born!

“It was such an amazing thing to hear from him of all people,” she said in an interview on NBC’s TODAY Show. “I thought it was a great point, and I started singing the chorus with the words, ‘You don’t have to try.’ I told him how exhausting it is for women. There’s so much we have to do in order to make ourselves beautiful so we feel accepted in the public eye. This is an anthem for women to accept who they are and be comfortable showing it and not hiding it.”

And that was also the basis for the lyric video for the song: Women having confidence in their bare skin.

While “Try” focuses mainly on fan photos, it also features fellow musicians Christina Perri, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Sara Bareilles, Jessie J, Fifth Harmony, Hayden Panettiere, Katharine McPhee, and Natasha Bedingfield among other celebs owning more simplistic and natural looks “wearing little to no makeup – whatever they were most comfortable with,” Colbie explained at the beginning of the video.

“Try” is the lead track off the “Bubbly” singer’s brand new EP, Gypsy Heart Side A, which was released on Monday. Buy it on iTunes here!
