Adam Levine Confirms Gwen Stefani Is on Next Maroon 5 Album
Although the lyrics sound like it’s about not being able to get past a broken relationship,”I think it’s kind of about a lot of things,” Adam clarifies. “It’s complicated. It’s also kind of not giving up on things too. People go through a lot of things and get stepped on and step on others and we all make mistakes … It’s kind of more about not giving up on something, even though maybe you should.”
Adam is “super excited” about the release of “Maps,” even though the band has put out great music since their 2002 debut.
“Every time we release a single, it always feel like the first time,” he explains. “I always get those butterflies. I’m so excited. I feel like I’m releasing a baby into the world … a song baby.”
And Adam is just as excited to release V, Maroon 5’s fifth album, which is set to drop in September.
“It’s my favorite one that we’ve ever done,” he says. “Here’s the deal, I’m so excited about this album. Mostly because I think that what we always do with every record … it’s kind of everything we’ve ever done as a band musically. It’s kind of all of those things on this album. It’s what we used to sound like, it’s what we sound like now, it’s what we want to sound like tomorrow. It’s all those elements all combined to make one, I think, really great album. It’s more of an album … It’s a better listen than ever. I like it, but I made it, so …”
Although Maroon 5 has been a band technically since 2002, Adam and the guys have been making music together since they were 15-years-old. But they weren’t always as cool and popular as they are now.
“We were freshmen in high school, no girls would talk to us,” he jokes. “I had pimples all over my face. I was not cool, really, at all. And that’s when all of this started, and we’re still doing it. It blows my mind.”
Adam also confirmed a rumor that has been going around about Maroon 5’s V album … that Gwen Stefani makes an appearance on it!
“How do you know everything already?” he jokingly asked Ryan after some stammering. “I wanted it to be a surprise, but she is.”
In addition to new Maroon 5 music, Adam is also making his movie debut in Begin Again with Keira Knightley, which is out June 27.
“She’s the greatest,” he says about his co-star. “I love her … It’s a really great movie. Forget about me, I was okay in it. But the movie is, more importantly, just a really great movie.”
In Begin Again, Adam plays a singer who drops his supportive (and equally-talented) girlfriend (Keira) after he makes it big … and then she sets out on creating her own career in music.
“It’s about a lot of things,” Adam explains of the plot. “My particular character plays kind of a semi … jerk face. It’s a love sorry, but it’s other things, too. It’s got a lot of things going on. The heart of it is about music and relationships, people’s relationships with each other. There are a lot of different stories being told … It’s just a beautiful movie. I’m very proud of it. I would love this movie, regardless of whether I was in it or not. It’s going to be great.”
Also up next for Adam is his marriage to Behati Prinsloo, and Ellen asked him if he went the traditional route and asked her father for his blessing. “I did ask his permission,” he reveals. “I don’t want to talk about it, you know how I am, but yes, of course I did. I had to. And it was extremely nerve-racking.”
