Zendaya Coleman Cast as Aaliyah in New Lifetime Biopic

Zendaya Coleman has proven she’s “one in a million” … because she’s been cast to play Aaliyah in an upcoming biopic produced by Lifetime.

Tentatively called Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, the film will document the life of the late singer, from her start on Star Search to her tragic death in a plane crash at the age of 22 in 2001, just hours after wrapping production on her music video for “Rock Da Boat.” The movie will be based off of Christopher Farley’s best-selling biography of her life, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, released last year.

Zendaya is definitely a new-comer to Hollywood, but has already hit the ground running. The actress is the star of Disney’s Shake It Up and was also a breakout performer on Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars, where she came in second place.

But the Disney starlet proves perfect for the role beyond her acting chops. Her first song “Replay” was a hit, spending 21 weeks on the Billboard Top 100.

After the news of her new role broke, the 17-year-old took to Twitter to show her love and respect for the late R&B singer.

Aaliyah’s biopic isn’t the only one currently on Lifetime’s plate. The network has begun production on a movie that documents the life of the legendary Whitney Houston, starring Yaya DaCosta.

The Aaliyah project is set to start filming over summer, with a tentative release this upcoming fall.
