Robin Thicke: Listening to Songs on ‘Paula’ Can Be ‘Overwhelming’
And the “Blurred Lines” singer came with a new look! “It’s ‘a man on a quest,'” he explained of his shaved head and beard combo.
As for his album, which is comprised of songs about the loss of — and still, the hope of winning back — his high school sweetheart-turned-wife, Paula Patton, it came very fast and furious for Robin.
“I didn’t have a choice,” he says. “I came right off a tour and I had all these songs and all these ideas and feelings in my heart. And I went right into the studio. I wrote all the songs in about three weeks and we recorded the album in about a month. Obviously all the songs were about her or about how I feel about her. A lot of songwriters have done this kind of thing before. They won’t tell you in the title or they’ll be suggestive … I was just like, ‘There’s no reason to hide who this is about.’ It’s all about her.”
Although Robin says he and Paula, “a remarkable woman,” have been in contact, he does want to keep the status of their current relationship “private.”
“Sometimes when I’m alone, I appreciate the connection,” he says about listening to the songs on Paula. “Sometimes, it’s overwhelming, also.”
And in his video for “Get Her Back,” Robin shows that vulnerable side with text messages between the two. Still, he says, those are also “private.” “I think you should keep a little mystery,” he adds. “I think it’s important to make something out of it. As an artist, I have to make art. As an entertainer, I want to entertain. And as a human being, this is all I want to talk about.”
Robin just shot a video for another track, “Still Madly Crazy,” and he says he had 10 8-year-olds reenact a wedding for it. “They’re singing the song and they have cake and they’re all dressed to a T.”
But although Robin has really opened himself up for Paula, at the core of it are two people who have shared a lot together, including their son Julian, 4.
“She’s not just my wife, she’s been my very best friend for 20 years,” says Robin. “I lost two people. That’s a lot to talk about.”
