5 Seconds of Summer Perform for Biggest Crowd on ‘Today’

This Australian “boy band” may have gained popularity opening for One Direction, but they are well on their way to making a name of their own.

5 Seconds of Summer‘s Michael Clifford, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin hit the Plaza to perform on the Today Show early Tuesday morning for an overwhelmingly-large audience.

Fans first started lining up last Thursday, and there were reportedly 18 young girls who received medical attention “because they’d been out for so long,” Hoda Kotb reported on the show.

The band that started out performing for a group of 11 people when they formed in 2011 hit the stage to play three hits including “She Looks so Perfect,” “Amnesia,” and “Don’t Stop.” Watch them below!

And, as it turns out, 5SOS are HUGE fans of actor Will Smith, and two fans took note, holding large cutouts of Smith’s face during their performance.

“Basically, Will Smith is probably the best man that ever lived,” guitarist and singer Luke Hemmings explained.

Two lucky fans even got upgraded to front row seats! Take a look!

It’s nice to see the boys staying so humble among all of their success and growing popularity. At least they still care to talk about the weather.
