The first results night of Season 8 brought only one mild surprise: Michael Sarver (pictured) outpaced Anoop Desai by a mere 20,000 votes to advance to the Top 12. Joining him, as expected, were Alexis Grace and Danny Gokey. But plesae don't feel sorry for Anoop...I'd place big money on him being named one of the wildcard finalists.

And let's have a big round of applause for the producers of American Idol for finally correcting one of the show's flaws that has bugged me for years. No longer do we have to endure encore performances from contestants who have just been sent packing. Isn't it much more enjoyable hearing from our favorite contestants again?

Final comment: What was going on with Carly Smithson's makeup???
