DAUGHTRY "Life After You"

Posted 11/8/2009 at 1:00am by Lee Chesnut

Chris Daughtry is one of my favorite vocalists to emerge from "American Idol," but is the platinum-selling howler getting stuck in a rut?  His new single "Life After You" is certainly catchy, well-produced, and vocally strong, but it falls into an overly familiar pattern established by his last three singles ("No Surprise", "What About Now," and "Feels Like Tonight").  Adult Top 40 radio stations will no doubt add this rock ballad to their playlists, but I'm ready to hear him shake things up a bit.

What do you think?

ADAM LAMBERT "For Your Entertainment"

Posted 10/30/2009 at 2:30pm by Lee Chesnut

The title track from Adam Lambert's debut album "For Your Entertainment" will be released to the iTunes store on Tuesday (Nov. 3) and it's a pop/glam stomper produced by Dr. Luke, the man behind some of the biggest hits from Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears.

I get a big kick out of the lyrics:
Do you know what you got into?
Can you handle what I'm about to do?
Because it's about to get rough for you
I'm here for your entertainment

What do you think of the song?  Hit or miss?  Sound off below!

LADY GAGA "Bad Romance"

Posted 10/27/2009 at 11:30am by Lee Chesnut

Even though "Paparazzi" is still a huge hit at radio, Lady GaGa just dropped her brand new single "Bad Romance" into the marketplace yesterday (10/27) and it has already shot up to #2 on the iTunes singles chart.  That makes 5 giant hits in a row for the seriously-talented GaGa, who co-wrote the song with RedOne, the producer behind "Poker Face" and others.

Initially I was a little put off by the lyric "I want your ugly, I want your disease", but after the chorus arrived at :57 into the song, it totally won me over.

What's your opinion?

ADAM LAMBERT "Time For Miracles"

ADAM LAMBERT
Rolling Stone

Although this song "Time For Miracles" isn't scheduled for inclusion on Adam Lambert's debut album "For Your Entertainment" (due Nov. 23), it is the first single from the soundtrack of the upcoming film "2012" and it's available in the iTunes store.  Every great diaster movie needs an emotional power balled to play when the final credits start to roll (think Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" from Armageddon), and this selection fits the bill perfectly.  Lambert's vocals sound as amazing as ever, and his delivery is exactly dramatic enough without going over the top.  Check it out:

Even though this isn't Adam's "official" first single, I think it's incredibly strong and I wouldn't be surprised if it races up the singles chart, whether the record label promotes it or not.  What do you think...hit or miss?  And who will sell more albums, Kris Allen or Adam Lambert?  Sound off below!

JOHN MAYER "Who Says"

Posted 10/15/2009 at 3:30pm by Lee Chesnut

John Mayer's fourth studio album Battle Studies is set to be released on November 17 and "Who Says" is that set's first single.  As a lyricist, Mayer is really letting it all hang out with this song, and the things he reveals about himself will thrill some and repel others.  On which side of the fence do you fall?

MICHAEL JACKSON "This Is It"

MICHAEL JACKSON

When I first heard that there was a "new" Michael Jackson song that was being released as a single in conjunction with the upcoming release of the concert film This Is It, I cringed a little.  Imagining what the discarded track that wasn't good enough to make it onto his 1991 album Dangerous would sound like had me assuming we were goinng to get something entirely second-rate.  But you know what?  I like this song.  Check it out:

Will "This Is It" return Michael to the Top 10 of the pop singles chart for the first time since 2001?  How do you think it stacks up against his other classic ballads?  Sound off below!

JORDIN SPARKS "S.O.S."

Posted 10/9/2009 at 7:30am by Lee Chesnut

For her followup to the Top 10 hit "Battlefield," Jordin Sparks borrows the chorus from Shannon's 1984 dance classic "Let the Music Play."  And while I don't think it will be as big as some of her other smash singles, it's fun to hear Jordin sing over a driving beat that's more uptempo than her previous offerings.

Is "S.O.S." taking her back to the top of the charts?  Or is Jordin better off sticking with slower songs like "No Air" and "Tattoo"?  Sound off below!

CHRIS BROWN "I Can Transform Ya"

Posted 10/1/2009 at 11:00am by Lee Chesnut

Before Chris Brown's problems with Rihanna and the criminal charges that resulted, the 20 year-old R&B star had strung together an impressive list of hit songs, including "Run It!", "With You", and his smash duet with Jordin Sparks, "No Air."  Since I imagine that Chris is aware of the image repair that needs to be done, I fully expected the first single from his forthcoming album Graffiti to be another of his slickly-produced, danceable pop songs, like his last Top 10 hit, the spectacular "Forever."

Well, I was wrong.  Teaming with Lil Wayne and producer Swizz Beatz, Brown has moved his sound in a grittier, harder-edged direction.  Since I'm such a fan of strong melodies, this song seems a bit noisy...I prefer the Michael Jackson-esque feel of his other hits.  What do YOU think?
